What is hantavirus? 

• Hantaviruses are group of viruses that is spread mainly by rodents.
• The disease caused by Hantavirus is called Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome(HPS).
• Primary source of hantaviruses are rodents.

According to Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),Hantaviruses in the Americas are known as “New World” hantaviruses may cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Other hantaviruses, known as “Old World” hantaviruses are found mostly in Europe and Asia and may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).The most important hantavirus in the United States that can cause HPS is the Sin Nombre virus, spread by the deer mouse.

Andes hantavirus doesn’t spread by one person to another person.

This disease is very serious because 40% of the people die due to  this virus. 

Where did hantavirus come from?

According to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) In 1978, the etiologic agent of Korean Hemerologic fever was isolated from small infected field rodent Apodemus agrarius near Hantan river in South Korea. The virus was named as Hanta virus, after the name of the river Hantan.

Symptoms of hantavirus:-

There are 2 disease can you get from hantavirus infections are-

1. HPS-Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
2. HFRS-Hamorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome

Symptoms appear within 1 to 5 weeks after exposure. The average is 2 to 4 weeks.

• Infected hantavirus people may be given medicine for fever,headache and pain and oxygen therapy.

People may need supportive care of-

• Help to maintain Oxygen levels.
• Help to prevent Dehydration.

There is no specific Vaccine found for hantavirus.

• Avoid touching rodent infected area.

• Avoid direct contact with farm or animals. 

• Avoid close contact with people who are affected with this virus.
